The Irvington Neighborhood, Portland Oregon
Historic Irvington Sign
For many people Irvington is all about the houses. Named after Captain William Irving, originally from Scotland, this Inner East side residential district excels in transportation access and its proximity to downtown, as well as its commercial village with great shopping, bookstores, coffee shops and restaurants, and its old houses and grand old parks.
Captain Irving came to Portland by way of Boston and San Francisco in 1849, bought land and then set up a business transporting lumber from San Francisco to Portland. Half of the homes in this neighborhood were built between 1920 and 1939, and many of the rest are older than this and nearly all were considered upper middle class when built. The homes are known for their vintage features and grand style: wood work flourishes, built in features, oak and fir floors, high ceilings, as well as fireplaces and front porches, and some still have the metal rings in the curbs used for tethering horses before the cars needed to park here.
